Crafts
There were some typical craftspeople in the Baroque who worked as tinkers or glassmakers.
Tinkers were from Eastern Slovakia. They were also door-to-door sellers in the 18th century. They made or mended potteries, chests, glasses and even pipes.
Glassmakers made luxury items in the 17th century. They were from the Southern and Northern Bohemia. Their typical products were crystal and chalk glasses. Later, craftworkers travelled and learned lots of new techniques. One of the most famous glassmakers was Ignác Preissler. Another craft was brewing. Women brewed beer at home until the 17th century and approx. 1300 breweries were established in the 18th century in Bohemia.
How to make a straw product
- We need one piece of reed straw, string, scissors and one piece of corn straw.
- We have to put the straw into the water until they will be soft. We will choose 5 same pieces of straw.
- Then we have to tie corn straw to the end of the reed straw upside down. Reed and corn straw must be separated and we will make something like star.
- Take one of the straws, cross it over another and bend it upside down. Repeat this process/work with each straw in one direction. Be sure that it will be fixed because it must be shaped.
- If the straw is too short, you must tie up another one.
- In the end we cut the straw and bend it inside.
