John Amos Comenius
Comenius was born on 28 March 1592 in Moravian Slovakia and died on 15 November 1670, Amsterdam and is considered to be the 'father of modern education'. He was also a philosopher, pedagogue and theologian. He served as the last bishop of the Unity of the Brethren. From 1608, he attended a Latin fraternal school in Přerov, from where he went to study Protestant universities in Germany. It is interesting to note that at that time, he added 'Amos' to his name as a reference to Bible teaching. His family declared themselves to the Church of the Unity of Brethren and he himself became a Bohemian Brethren clergyman. After his studies, he worked as a priest and a teacher in Přerov. His life story was influenced by one of the most remarkable events of the seventeenth century - the Battle of White Mountain and the subsequent Thirty Years' War. During this period, the Czech lands experienced an extensive wave of re-Catholicization. In 1621, Comenius, as a member of the Protestant Church he and his family, had to hide, first in East Bohemia, then in the late 1920s, they went to Polish Leszno, which was his home until 1656. The possibility of returning to his homeland, to which he continued to talk in his works, was undermined by the Peace of Westphalia. So instead, he traveled around Europe and as a celebrity he gained fame across states that later applied his knowledge of modernizing education, where he began working from his first teaching experience in Přerov. During his travels, he visited England, Sweden, Hungary or the Netherlands. It was Amsterdam that became his next home after 1656, when there was a fire in Leszno and he lost much of his work. He continued his educational activities until his death in 1670. Comenius is buried in Naarden in the Netherlands but the Czech Republic is responsible for his memorial.
